I’m Dr Sian Williams, my research area is photochemistry – the interaction of light with matter.
The picture shows an Ultra Violet lamp which is supplying energy to the materials under it. Look closely at the bank note, beads and rock. These are pretty boring and colourless under normal light, but under UV there’s a colourful 20, the beads are multicoloured and the pale patches on the rock appear bright orange.
I’m no longer actively researching, however I’m passionate about science communication and inspiring young people to think about science and not be switched off or scared by it.
