Picture this: war has broken out in your home country. You’re young, passionate, and suddenly an uncertain path lies ahead.
That was Vlad’s reality in 2022.
Originally from Ukraine, Vlad made a difficult choice to leave his maritime studies to take refuge in a safer place and to pursue his love of mathematics. Taking his first steps on that journey, Vlad moved to the UK, lived with a host family, and found work at a brewery.
He was ready to explore new opportunities:
“I noticed that throughout my life, I had been passionate about three things: maths, sports, and discipline/motivation.
“I decided I wanted to try and get into university in the UK. I attended an open day in Loughborough, and I immediately knew this was the place I wanted to study!”
Vlad was ready to pursue his dream, but one hurdle stood in the way: how to finance his studies.
That’s where the Loughborough Fund and generous donations from alumni supported Vlad to take his next steps.
Vlad was awarded a Sanctuary Scholarship – transforming the next chapter of his life in the UK – and continuing to offer him a place of sanctuary. He said:
“I wasn’t given any tuition loan, so I was just about to give up on this path.”
Vlad was delighted to hear the news of his scholarship:
“My first action was to tell my mother about the award. This was a very touching moment for both of us, and to see her that happy to the point of tears made the day even more special.
“In my case, the scholarship is not only a personal achievement, but it also relieves a lot of pressure and is a massive source of motivation. It strengthens my desire to achieve my dreams and to do it with my full potential. This scholarship is not only a financial help, but also an investment into my future. By allowing people like me to continue their studies, I can continue to make a positive difference in the world. I will do my very best and go above and beyond!”
Donations make a real difference to students like Vlad, who is now in the final year of his mathematics degree at Loughborough. Thanks to your support, he has been able to pursue a lifelong dream.
“My dad used to teach me maths concepts ahead of the school curriculum – my passion for the subject was ignited. I am an ambitious person, driven by a wish to contribute to the world.”
Vlad has his sights set on a career using artificial intelligence to tackle global challenges. He’s following in the footsteps of alumni everywhere, made possible by generous donations.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Loughborough Fund.
