Donors help make that decision and transition that bit easier for some Loughborough students.
This year, donations to Opportunity Scholarships are supporting 50 new students who are now settling in to life at Loughborough. They are studying a broad array of courses ranging from sport and humanities to business and science. They join more than 100 Opportunity Scholars who are continuing their studies into second and final years.
Many of the students who apply for the scholarships are from households with low incomes, receive free school meals, or are from areas of the UK where there is low participation in higher education. Opportunity Scholarships are awarded to those that demonstrate academic potential and face significant barriers.
The average household income of this year’s scholars is less than £3,820 a year.
One of those students is Tom, who is studying for a degree in Sport Science, Coaching and Physical Education. He achieved three A grades at A-Level, despite facing personal loss and instability.
He said: “In the last few years, my home life hasn't been great with my mum passing away after struggling with alcoholism for six years and dad not being in the picture, so I had no financial support apart from the scraps from refereeing. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to afford to live at university, especially with my student finance only being £800 more than my rent.”
Now, thanks to an Opportunity Scholarship, Tom will receive £3,000 a year for three years of study.
This support can have a real impact on students like Tom. Scholars can get involved with more activities, focus on studies, and worry less about their financial situation. It provides them with peace of mind and the chance to enjoy university life to the full.
Joy is a second year scholar who understands first-hand how impactful a scholarship can be. It has helped her to settle into university life, pursue her passions for basketball and the gym, and afford greater costs heading into second year.
“Being able to commit to university without having to worry about finances has been such a great help. I’ve been able to do what I love the most and it has really shaped my university experience, especially this second year.
“This will forever be a motivation to never stop what I want to pursue.”
Since the programme launched in 2013, over 400 students have benefited from an Opportunity Scholarship with thanks to generous donors. Yet so many more students need support to continue their journey to success. Currently, just 1 in 3 students in need are awarded a scholarship. With your help, more students can benefit.
