The global wine industry has become a popular empirical context across a range of business disciplines. At the same time, vineyards and wineries are facing numerous challenges, like evolving customer preferences, the emergence of new entrants, variable government policies, climate change, and competition from substitute alcohol varieties (e.g., craft beer, single malt whisky, and gin).
The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified some of these concerns, meaning that wine producers (and other enterprises within the worldwide alcohol market) have pivoted their business models (e.g., digitalising and/or internationalising their activities to reach new and existing customers).
With these market-wide opportunities and threats being so volatile, now is an important time to investigate how alcohol producers can manage their operations to survive and grow during these extraordinary circumstances.
The Wine Business Research Interest Group is comprised of an international team of researchers that specialise in domains, such as (but not limited to) marketing, entrepreneurship, international business, strategic management, innovation, tourism and hospitality, organisational sociology, operations management, and regional policy.
Our research is designed to use the global wine industry as a setting to make substantial contributions to academic theory. However, just as crucially, our members seek to deliver practically relevant findings to practitioners. With members spread throughout the world, our research is intended to apply to numerous national contexts. That is, our members live and work in various countries, including the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Israel, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Monaco, Chile, China, Finland, and more.
We have strong connections with wine-focused practitioners, including entrepreneurs, journalists, Masters of Wine (MWs), industry leaders, and wine educators. We are dedicated to fostering these links with practitioners, as we make our work actionable to decision-makers. We are grateful to all these practitioners for their support – not least of which their contributions towards our research endeavours.
If you have any questions about the Wine Business Research Interest Group, please contact Dr James M. Crick.
The Wine Business Research Interest Group is divided into the following nine distinct themes.
