Alumnus awarded Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society

Tony Buttler (MA Information and Library Studies 1995) joined the Royal Aeronautical Society when he was employed as a metallurgist by High Duty Alloys, known as Mettis Aerospace. Now, he has been named a Fellow of the Society.

Under the name Tony Butler, he has written over 40 books and well over 150 articles for a range of well-known historical aviation magazines.  

He has also presented lectures to branches of the Royal Aeronautical Society and other aviation bodies and groups. 

Tony’s main area of interest and research has been the design and development of military aircraft covering the period from the mid-1930s to the 1980s. 

In 2017, he became a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Historical Group Committee, and in November 2022, he received the Society’s Aeronautical Heritage Specialist Group Award in recognition of his contribution to aviation history.  

In August 2024, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
