Earlier this month, the University hosted a series of alumni and offer-holder events across West Africa, bringing together graduates, future students and university representatives in Abuja, Lagos, and Accra.

The events aimed to reconnect and engage with alumni in each area. They provided the opportunity for offer-holders to hear about the experiences of Loughborough graduates first-hand while staff shared updates on the University’s latest news.

The first event took place on Sunday 15 June at BluCabana Restaurant & Café in Abuja, Nigeria with 30 people attending, followed by a second on Tuesday 17 June at the Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel in Lagos with 45 people attending. The alumni panel for Lagos included Alumni Advisory Board member Aisha Adedeji (Banking, Finance and Management 2015), who said:

My highlight? Meeting the next generation of Loughborough students, full of promise and excitement. The questions they asked reminded me of how much courage it takes to step into a new chapter - and how powerful it is to know you’re not alone.”

Global Alumni Ambassador Ashley Stewart (MSc International Management 2008) also attended the Lagos reception and later shared on LinkedIn:

“It was a night filled with meaningful conversations, memories, and inspiration. I was honored to reflect on how my time at Loughborough shaped my career, thinking, and global perspective – and to offer advice to future students preparing for their own exciting journey.”

The final event took place on Wednesday 18 June in Accra, Ghana at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City with 64 people attending. An unexpected highlight was discovering that Melissa Bediako, Director of Sales and Marketing at the venue, is herself a Loughborough alumna.

Sam Grogan, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, who was leading the delegation said on LinkedIn:

“For me a striking aspect of the event was also listening to our offer holders. What came across very clearly was the recognition that a Loughborough experience is a huge life-changing step for anyone undertaking such a profound transition.

“It was a privilege to be able to connect offer holders directly with alumni who shared valuable insights, perspectives and stories which always help make the road ahead less intimidating.”

In addition to the alumni receptions, the delegation met with individual alumni, partner agents, the private sector, and government ministers to explore different partnerships.

The Alumni Engagement Team staff met with a group of alumni in Abuja, where the team were presented with a special handmade tapestry on behalf of alumni in the city.
