Before you arrive

We've put together some practical information to help you prepare for your time at Loughborough.

Visas

From 1 January 2021 the visa regulations for students studying in the UK have changed.

Check if you need a visa

The UK government website linked below features a useful tool to evaluate if a visa is needed for a particular situation.

If you need a visa, you should consider the costs of the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge.

The University's Student Advice and Support Service provides advice to all students who need to apply for student permission from outside the UK. If you need specific advice about your circumstances, our advisers can guide you before you complete your online application.

Accommodation

Once your application documents have been approved, you will be sent an official acceptance letter that contains your student number. With this number you can apply for the support of the Student Accommodation Centre to help you find a room.

There is a wide range of accommodation options for students in Loughborough, both on and off campus.

Although there is no guarantee that you will be allocated a room in University halls of residence, we promise to help you secure University allocated accommodation, either on campus or by referral to an off campus provider.

Health insurance

Studying in the UK for less than 6 months

Before you travel, you will need to buy travel insurance with healthcare cover.

Studying in the UK for more than 6 months

When you apply for a visa, you will be asked to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). This will allow you to use most NHS services for free, although services such as prescriptions, dental treatment and optical treatment are not included and will need to be paid for separately.

Those not covered by the NHS are strongly advised to take out medical insurance.
