Passivhaus build SportPark Pavilion 4 receives Environmental Best Practice Award

SportPark Pavilion 4, Loughborough University’s first Passivhaus build, has received a prestigious international award for Environmental Best Practice at the Green Apple Environment Awards.

Designed to recognise organisations across the world that show innovation and commitment to being environmentally responsible, Henry Brothers Construction received the accolade for SportPark Pavilion 4 last week, at the Houses of Parliament.

A major expansion enabling more sports organisations and businesses to Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park (LUSEP), SportPark Pavilion 4 was officially opened last month by Dame Katherine Grainger, Chair of UK Sport.

Alex Owen, Chief Financial Officer of Loughborough University and executive lead for the development of LUSEP, said: “SportPark Pavilion 4 has been superb team effort which sets the benchmark for the sustainable development of the University campus. David Morley Architects, Henry Brothers and many sub-contractors worked alongside experts from the University’s Estates and Facilities Management Team and Building Energy Research Group to obtain Passivhaus Classic accreditation for the build.”

Ian Taylor, Managing Director at Henry Brothers Construction, said: “It is fantastic to have been recognised on an international level for our efforts to help Loughborough University decarbonise its estate. Having achieved Passivhaus Classic accreditation, widely regarded as the most challenging energy efficiency and comfort standards in the world, SportPark Pavilion 4 adds to our already impressive portfolio of sustainable builds. This accolade is testament to the dedication of our staff to make a meaningful impact on the communities in which we operate and further strengthens our commitment to net zero.”

Joel Callow, Founding Director of Beyond Carbon Associates, said: “We are delighted that one of our favourite Passivhaus projects has won this prestigious award. This is a notable achievement for Henry Brothers that sets a great example both for the region and nationally, as SportPark Pavilion 4 is one of the very few certified Passivhaus office buildings in the UK. Loughborough University has shown great leadership by embarking on this project.”

SportPark Pavilion 4 is delivered by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) as part of the Getting Building Fund. Funds were designated for investment in local, shovel-ready infrastructure projects to stimulate jobs and support economic recovery across the country. The LLEP was allocated £20m, supporting the SportPark expansion with £6m.

Further funding has been provided through the University’s Healthy and Innovative Loughborough project which received £2.5m from the Government’s Towns Fund via Loughborough Town Deal. The project aims to build on the town’s reputation for sporting excellence and harness that knowledge for the good of residents. The Town Deal is backing 11 projects worth over £40m of investment to Loughborough.
