What better way to find out about life at Loughborough than to hear it from our current students:

Ruby Lam

Master of Business Administration (MBA) student at Loughborough University

Current Student - Lok Chi Tang

Course: Mathematics and Accounting and Financial Management (UG).

Year of study: Second.

Studying in Loughborough University will be one of your best memories. There is a good studying atmosphere around the university. During your time here, you will be guided by a tutor, and the tutor will support you with study and career guidance. Moreover, the library, the office, lecturers, and other students are always friendly and happy to communicate with others. Even being an international student, I don’t have any issues in communication or culture.

I chose to study at Loughborough University because I gathered some information about different universities and I found Loughborough University to be by far the right place to come study. First, the Mathematics Learning Support Centre is available to seek help very often. I can get advice for better learning in mathematics. Second, the sport is really famous and strong. I love playing sports. There are plenty of sports activities and teams that I can join, so that I can train and play more in my university life. Third, Loughborough University has a very good reputation amongst employers. Students are able to get employed after studying the degree programme. Therefore, I chose Loughborough University.

Meanwhile, Loughborough life is fun! When you want to relax a bit or join any of the 100 different societies, the student union will give you a wonderful experience. You can join the party night and have fun with friends or join the university team to improve your skills. In addition, there are recreational activities too. You can just show up and play.

I believe no matter what kind of lifestyle you are in, Loughborough life is one of your best choice.

What course did you study? BSc (Hons) Accounting and Financial Management

Year of Graduation: 2014

What are you doing now? Global Private Banking, Employer, HSBC, Hong Kong

Your background:

I studied in Hong Kong before finishing a foundation degree at Bellerbys College in Cambridge and then going to Loughborough University.

Where are you now?

I am currently working for HSBC in Hong Kong. I am employed under a 12 month renewable contract.  My team belongs to the department of Global Private Banking and the main duties of the team include generating financial reports for high-net-worth individuals and preparing reports on different financial products for internal use.

How did you get there?

My plan was to work under short-term contracts for different companies in different industries in order to figure out the industry and job role that suits me.  The accounting degree provided by the University did not concentrate solely and narrowly on financial accounting; it had a focus on financial accounting and included a range of business-related modules such as Financial Risk Management and Business programming.  My first job after graduation was working as a 3 month contract accountant at a carnival which took place in Hong Kong.  I am now working at my second job on a 12 month contract for HSBC.

Where are you going?

I try to learn as much as I can from my current work with a vision of developing my career in China.

What if anything would you have done differently during your time at Loughborough University to help you prepare better for your career/life upon graduation?

There isn’t a single thing I would change.

What advice would you give now to a student studying your subject at university now?

Results of first year exams are relevant to your placement hunting because the hunting should commence before the first semester of your second year.
