International applicants

Entry Requirements for Chinese Students

Undergraduate

China

Students taking the Senior Middle Examinations will need to complete a suitable Foundation Year. 

Loughborough University has its own Foundation Year for high-calibre international students who have successfully completed 12 years of school education. Alternatively, please contact the International Office to check if the Foundation Programme that you are considering taking is acceptable for entry to Loughborough courses.

Alternatively, we will accept a first year of study at a recognised university of appropriate standing within China as acceptable for entry to the first year of some of our degree courses. We would typically require an overall average ranging from 75% to 80% with specific subject marks required for some courses. Please contact the International Office who can advise on acceptability for entry to Loughborough courses.

All students must also achieve the University’s English language requirements.

Postgraduate

Students are required to have a bachelor degree (4 years) for entry to a postgraduate programme. The University uses the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities to identify the required final mark, as outlined on the table below:

Affiliated Colleges

The University will consider students from Affiliated Colleges in the following way:

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 80%-84%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 82%-87%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will considered as follows:

  • School of Business and Economics: not considered
  • All other programmes if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 82%-87%.

Universities Given Special Consideration

Applicants from a small number of Chinese universities that specialise in business, management, finance or creative arts will be given special consideration by the University.  A list of these universities and the Shanghai band under which they will be considered can be downloaded here: Universities given special consideration - China entry requirements.

Students who do not meet the above requirements may occasionally be considered if they have a relevant degree, can show good grades in relevant subjects, and/or have substantial relevant work experience.

English language requirements

Candidates must also achieve the University's English language requirements.

Pre-sessional English Language tuition is available for those applicants whose scores in English Language fall slightly below that normally expected for entry.
