Industrial Design is the professional practice of designing products, devices, objects and services used by millions of people around the world every day.
Industrial designers traditionally focus on the physical appearance, functionality, and manufacturability of a product, but they are now involved in far more during a development cycle. This ultimately extends to the overall lasting value and experience a product or service provides for end-users.
Our MSc Integrated Industrial Design degree will further develop your critical awareness of major industrial design practice, increasing input capability and value to employers. The programme encompasses the entire design process, starting from a design problem or opportunity and ending with a complete product that is fit for mass or batch production. It is suitable for both recent graduates and current practitioners who are looking to advance their core design knowledge and specialist skills to a higher level.
It covers areas such as sketching, visual layouts, presentation techniques, qualitative and quantitative design research methods, enterprise and business, design for AI products, design for inclusivity, creating product design briefs, project management, sustainability, new product development and design practice.

What you'll study
The following information is intended as an example only and is typically based on module information for the 2025/26 year of entry. Modules are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to future changes. Updated Programme and Module Specifications are made available ahead of each academic year. Please also see Terms and Conditions of Study for more information.
Each of the modules in our integrated industrial design master's complements the others; the knowledge and understanding from each will accumulate to provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to become a successful industrial or product designer.
Compulsory
Design Research Methods (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the design research process, and how the methods and tools it comprises are used to collect, analyse, synthesise, and interpret research data for design research projects.
Industrial Design & Technology Skills (15 credits)
The aim of the module is:
- To develop knowledge of and competence with a range of visual communication methods used by industrial designers.
- To develop knowledge of technologies associated with industrial design and suggest the integration of such technologies in the Industrial Design process.
- To explore emerging technologies and consider the possible impact on future designs.
Digital Design and Fabrication (15 credits)
This module aims to provide students with a digital design workflow for transforming design concepts into both virtual and physical prototypes. This focuses on providing students with fundamentals of digital design and digital fabrication techniques, followed by the practical application of these techniques to the industrial design process.
Optional
Design for Inclusivity (15 credits)
This module aims to enable students to systematically understand the variety of needs that a wide range of users might have, including older adults and people with disabilities, and how their needs should be considered within design. The students will apply their inclusive design skills by critically analysing existing products, services, or systems, as well as working towards the delivery of an evidence-based design outcome.
Design for AI Products (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to enable students to identify AI opportunities in a Product (Service) Design context, critically understand, and apply the four stages of the AI Design Process. Analyse the steps to build a process/business case through assessing the needs of stakeholders, mapping the process, cost modeling, assessing technical readiness, prioritising opportunities, and asking key questions.
Compulsory
Business, Enterprise and Design (30 credits)
The aim of this module is to provide students with:
- A Foundational understanding of business and enterprise structures, associated models and templates, when applied to the commercialisation of a product;
- A Foundational understanding of marketing of a product and how to present and communicate the attributes of a product to attract investment; and,
- To raise awareness of the context of their design decision-making within an International market and Global challenges.
Digital Product Development (30 credits)
New practices and digital technologies are continuously being developed and integrated into the design industry to create and capitalise on potential new markets. This module introduces innovative practices and digital design technologies that enhance, streamline, and support the product development process.
Integrated Industrial Design Major Project (60 credits)
The aim of the module is to undertake and manage a complete design process from inception to manufacturable design proposal. The module includes identification of a design problem, appropriate research, concept development and selection, design development, prototyping, appropriate evaluation and design for manufacture. To conclude with a feasible, manufacturable design proposal that satisfies an agreed project brief and detailed product design specification.
