An Ethnographic Study of Robot-Assisted Care in Chinese Nursing Homes

Supervisors: Dr Laura Valadez-Martinez and Dr Catherine Coveney

Dan’s research explores the intersection of ageing, technology, and care, with a focus on the use of care robots in Chinese nursing homes.

Her doctoral project uses ethnographic methods to investigate how older people, care staff, and family members experience and perceive robotic care. Grounded in sociological theories of ageing, technology, and care, Dan’s work critically examines both the promises and limitations of care robots in practice, offering insights into their social, cultural, and ethical implications in real-world eldercare settings.
