I’ve always been passionate about physics from secondary school and my strongest subject has always been Maths. I really liked the modules in Loughborough university particularly the computational physics modules. Loughborough university has great industry connections and I knew by studying at Loughborough I would be able to accelerate my career.

I received detailed feedback on my CV and cover letters and also advice on going forward with interviews and assessment centres. I also got notified regularly of new and different opportunities for internships and placement positions for Physics students.

My placement year at CGI was an invaluable experience, I have been able to grow into a confident individual with a new found skill set. I was able to apply the team-working, problem-solving, computational, and public speaking skills that I developed in my 1st and 2nd years of my course in real-world applications. I have gained an insight into the industry by meeting lots of different professionals from various backgrounds which has broadened my horizons for my career.

A typical day would start with a stand-up meeting where I would relay the status of my work to the team. I then worked on my tasks, which varied but would include writing unit tests for the source code, implementing code changes, prototyping code, updating and writing documents. Throughout the day I would often need to talk and work with my colleagues for advice, help or information I needed for my tasks.

I would strongly encourage someone to do a placement year, not only does it give you an opportunity to develop your skills and apply them in real-life projects, but also gives you a valuable insight into your career path after university.
