I chose to study Contemporary Literature and Culture because I wanted to further develop the knowledge and passion for literature that I gained during my English Literature degree in Indonesia.
I knew that I wanted to pursue my postgraduate studies abroad, and the MA programme at Loughborough particularly appealed to me because of its contemporary focus. It offered a fresh and different approach to the subject that aligned closely with my interests. My career aspiration is to pursue a professional role as an academic at an Indonesian University. However, I am also open to exploring other career opportunities that align with my skills, interest and experience.
I particularly enjoyed the range of reading materials on this MA programme, which introduced me to interesting theories and critical perspectives. They encouraged me to reflect on my existing knowledge, deepen my understanding of the subject, as well as develop my analytical skills. I also found the field study fascinating, as my peers and I visited literary and cultural sites including Southwell Workhouse and Infirmary, as well as Bradgate Park. During my undergraduate studies in Indonesia, I could only explore many of these places through books and online resources but having the opportunity to visit them in person has greatly enriched my understanding of English literature. In addition, I had the opportunity to undertake practical assessments that included creating a podcast and managing a festival, which equipped me with experience in digital production and effective team-working.
Whilst studying, I had the opportunity to explore a wide range of cultural forms including literature, digital media, drama, film and television. To complement my academic learning and gain practical experience during my studies, I worked part-time as a Digital Media Ambassador for the English department. This role enabled me to develop my content creation experience, as well as strengthen my confidence, teamwork, organisational and communication skills. It also provided valuable experience of working in a collaborative and professional environment.
The academic support at the University has been excellent. The tutors are approachable and open to questions. In addition, the University offers a range of academic skills sessions through Learn, including paraphrasing and academic writing workshops, which can be accessed both online and in person. As an international student, I have found this support particularly valuable and some of my friends have also benefited from these resources as well.
The library team has been incredibly helpful throughout my studies. They assisted me in locating specific reading materials through the inter-library loan service, and an academic librarian provided valuable guidance on improving my referencing skills. In addition, the University gives students access to Kanopy, a streaming platform offering a wide range of films and documentaries, which has been particularly beneficial to my learning and research on the course.
I have many highlights from my student experience at Loughborough. I particularly enjoyed the events and activities organised by the International Student Experience (ISE) team, which helped me meet new people, build friendships and settle into life in a new country. The fireworks event organised by Loughborough Students' Union was another especially memorable experience.
More generally, I have been impressed by the wide range of societies and extracurricular activities available at Loughborough. They provide excellent opportunities to pursue interests beyond my studies, connect with other students and develop new skills.
Since finishing my MA study, I have been expanding my practical experience through a virtual volunteering role as an Associate Editor for the Journal of English Studies at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman in Indonesia. This opportunity allows me gain valuable skills in journal article management.
My advice to prospective students is to make the most of the support available. Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for guidance from tutors and University staff. I would also encourage you to take advantage of all the opportunities and facilities on offer, as they can enhance your learning experience and help you develop both personally and professionally.
