Overview

Loughborough Law staff offer world-leading expertise in law and social and global justice.

We bring a critical approach to researching law’s effects on people, communities and cultures. Our findings shape academic knowledge and legal reform both within the United Kingdom and internationally. Our transformative socio-legal research leads academic debate and advances cutting-edge solutions to social and global problems.

We are renowned for advancing interdisciplinarity, animating and deepening traditional legal research with methods and perspectives from sociology, criminology, history, political economy, environmental studies, philosophy and anthropology. We focus on situating law and legal reform within a wider social and political analysis and combine attention to the letter of the law with awareness of law’s role in perpetuating inequalities or challenging oppression.

Our staff are at the forefront of research in socio-legal studies, feminist legal studies, critical legal studies and decolonial legal studies, across a range of legal subjects.

Your development

You will be assigned two supervisors who are international experts in their respective fields, plus an internal reviewer and a Director of Doctoral Programmes. This team provides tailored academic and pastoral support throughout your studies.

Law staff are based at both the East Midlands and London campuses of the University. Wherever your primary supervisor is based, you will join a vibrant community of doctoral students and researchers. You will benefit from dedicated study space and a range of support offered by the School of Social Sciences and Humanities or Loughborough University London in collaboration with the Doctoral College.

You’ll have the chance to participate in and run seminars and discussion groups. These will help you integrate into the academic community and develop skills that will enable you to present your work at conferences and communicate with a variety of audiences.

Entry requirements

A master's degree with Merit (or equivalent international qualification) in Law or a relevant discipline and a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in Law or a relevant discipline.

Substantial professional work experience/qualifications may also be taken into consideration.

Relevant disciplines include social sciences and humanities disciplines, such as criminology, sociology, social policy, English, history, philosophy, anthropology, political science, international relations, social psychology or social geography.  

The master's degree must include a substantial dissertation component.

The University will consider students from Affiliated Colleges in the following way:

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities in the top 250 Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 67%-80%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are 251-500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 70%-83%.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows if they have achieved or are likely to achieve final marks of 75%-86%.

How to apply

Submit your research proposal to the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Your research proposal should be 2,000-5,000 words long. It should situate your proposed research within relevant scholarly literature and provide a full reference list. In particular, the proposal should include:

  • Your proposed research question(s)
  • The contribution that the research intends to make to existing knowledge
  • A rationale which demonstrates why the contribution is valuable
  • Discussion of your proposed theoretical approach or conceptual framework for analysis
  • Your proposed methodology for conducting the research
  • A provisional research plan
