What is design innovation?

Design innovation combines creativity, strategy and collaboration to help organisations, communities and creative practitioners respond to complex challenges, develop new opportunities and shape future experiences, from sustainability and social change to digital transformation and emerging creative practices.

This programme is for graduates and professionals who want to use design beyond traditional practice, as a way of thinking and driving systemic innovation. You’ll develop the skills to apply design approaches across organisations, sustainable futures and creative practices.

Gain real industry experience

A key benefit of this programme is the opportunity to gain real experience with a UK company through our industry-based Collaborative Project module. Students will work in a team on a real industry problem and get to present their ideas to a client company. This module offers real experience that students can put onto their CV. The module culminates in the Collaborative Project Show where the best teams get to pitch their ideas to our partners and advisory board members.

While the programme offers a shared foundation in design innovation, students can tailor their learning through a selection of optional modules, projects and research activities. This flexible approach enables you to develop a personalised area of focus aligned with your interests and career ambitions. You may choose to develop deeper expertise in one of the programme’s thematic areas, strategic design and organisational leadership, sustainable futures and social transformation, or creative industries and digital economies, or tailor your pathway by selecting elements from across these areas to create a distinctive design innovation profile.
