Loughborough's Educational Advancement Project is a compulsory element of the LUDUS Gold Programme and is a valuable opportunity to receive exclusive access to a PhD student and develop key research skills.

Over the course of 2 OR 4 weeks you will work alongside one of Loughborough’s PhD students, researching a topic and then preparing an academic submission that outlines your findings.

Below you will find profiles of each LEAP mentor. Please read these and complete the form to select your preferred mentor session. Contact us at ludus@mailbox.lboro.ac.uk if you have any questions.

Adam

Name: Adam

School/department: Chemical Engineering

Session: Thursday 16th Feb, 23rd Feb, 2nd March, 9th March 6 - 7.30pm (4 weeks)

My name Adam and I am currently in my 3rd year of my PhD. Being in my 7th year university shows how much I’ve enjoyed my time in higher education over the years. My hobbies include, going to several music festivals a year and watching as many films as I possibly can throughout the year. Staying fit is a key part of my life with football, both watching and playing, taking up a big part of that. I’m also a member of the Powerlifting and Weightlifting team here at Loughborough as well.

In terms of my general PhD research area, I am looking into oxygen evolution and hydrogen production, from water and seawater splitting, driven by renewable energy. The main focus of my PhD is to produce and utilise a selection of low-cost, highly efficient and highly selective catalysts for the process.

Alice

Name: Alice

School/department: Design

Session: Wednesday 15th Feb, 22nd Feb, 1st March & 8th March 6 - 7.30pm (4 weeks)

Hi I’m Alice, I’m researching how driverless vehicles can communicate intent to motorcyclists. Being a motorcyclist, this area is very close to my heart! I am designing external display for driverless cars to replace the intent cues they read from human drivers. My first study was very psychology based, looking into how motorcyclists read intent and how they process and interpret these signals. My second study was more to with policy and politics, looking how different stakeholders both in motorcycling and driverless cars see the future development of driverless vehicles. The third study involved creating and coding a virtual reality to prototype the displays to show on the outside of the driverless vehicles for motorcyclists to assess. Again, there was a large element of psychology here, but for the study development I used computer programming, game design and various other skills. I am now looking to my final study, which will be either an on-road study or a seeing how these displays work with other road users. I am also dyslexic and am happy to share experiences and advice for those pursuing higher education with learning difficulties. To help balance the PhD work I keep very active and as well as riding my motorbike I love to climb, sail, swim and play hockey!

Artemi

Session: Tuesday & Thursday 21st Feb, 23rd Feb, 28th Feb & 2nd March 6 - 7.30pm (for 2 weeks)

I hold a bachelor's and a master’s degree in Economics from Greek universities. The MBA Degree was given by ALBA Graduate School in Greece too. Currently, I am a Ph.D. candidate in Retail and Marketing at the School Of Business and Economics at Loughborough University. My research area is in New Product Development activities.

I am excited about sports and arts, as well as musical activities.

Charlie

Name: Charlie

School/department: Physics

Session: Tuesday and Thursday 14th, 16th, 21st & 23rd Feb 5 - 6.30pm (2 weeks)

Hello! I’m Charlie, I’m in my third year of doing my PhD in (theoretical) quantum memristors. A.k.a. looking at the properties of electron flow we’d expect from a device which is like a resistor, but has ‘memory’. My colleagues and I currently have two papers in the works on this topic, and hope to have a third done by the time I’ve finished my PhD. I’ve always been interested in maths and physical sciences, and see such patterns in many different places in my life. I enjoy constructing periodic lattices (crochet, knitting) as well as listening for interesting acoustic harmonics (playing guitar and keyboard… badly). I love reptiles (I have a pet boa constrictor <3) and I adore cats.

Hannah

Name: Hannah

School/department: Chemistry

Session: Wednesday 15th Feb, 22nd Feb, 1st March, 8th March 5 - 6.30pm (4 weeks)

Hi, I'm Hannah and I'm from Blackpool! I'm a PhD Researcher in the Chemistry Department at Loughborough focusing of neurodegenerative disease cell culture models. I did my undergraduate at Bangor in Sport Science with Outdoor Activities and then came to Loughborough for my masters in Musculoskeletal Sport Science and Health. I love to play handball and lacrosse as well as climbing, mountaineering and kayaking. I also have a pretty decent boardgame collection! I'm looking forward to supporting you on your LEAP journey with us!

Milly

Name: Milly

School/department: English

Sessions: Monday 13th Feb, 20th Feb, 27th Feb & 6th March 5 - 6.30pm (for 4 weeks)

OR Tuesday 14th Feb, 21st Feb, 28th Feb, 7th March 6 - 7.30pm (4 weeks)

My name is Milly and I’m a PhD student in Loughborough University’s English Department, which sits in the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. When I'm not working on my PhD, I love painting and gaming, but most of the time you’ll find me reading ghost stories.

My research project ‘Queer Weirdness, Weird Queerness’ looks at the intersection of British queer history with the nation’s love of all things spooky. My primary research involves a collection of strange and uncanny tales written between 1890-1914, so I spend a lot of my time reading about ghosts, vampires, strange shadow entities, and things that the waking world simply has no name for. I can’t wait to get started on the LEAP programme and share some of my favourite tales with you!

Theo

Name: Theo

School/department: Mechanical, Electrical & Manufacturing Engineering

Sessions: Thursday 16th Feb, 23rd Feb, 2nd March & 9th March 5 - 6.30pm (for 4 weeks)

Hi there, I'm Theo. I am a final year PhD student in mechanics of advanced materials at Loughborough University. My topic explores the strength and durability of leg prosthetic sockets for kids manufactured using 3D Printing. Before that I completed my degree in Greece in Production Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Crete. I'm a fishkeeper and a big fan of cats. In my free time I love trying different sports and watching videos with rally cars.
