Laser Pointer Safety Guidance

Laser Pointers

Lasers are classified to indicate the severity of the hazard posed by the emitted beam. Laser pointers and laser pens used in the University should be class 1 or class 2 as defined in the British Standards for laser safety. Further information on lasers can be found in the Laser Safety Code of Practice.

Whilst the manufacturer is responsible for the correct classification of lasers pointers, there have been cases where laser pointers have been purchased and when tested are class 3B or class 4. These lasers are not eye safe and so are not suitable to be used.

Laser pointers can be obtained from Teaching Support, contact teachingsupport@lboro.ac.uk

A yellow warning triangle sign with the starburst, this sign is used to alert people that lasers are in use in a particular area. A black text with letters saying UKCA
