Progression
A PhD at Loughborough is made up of three Parts; R1, R2 & R3 (if you are part of a CDT your programme may also begin with Part R0). Your progress will be reviewed regularly throughout your studies and a satisfactory progression review is required to move into the next Part of your programme.
All Doctoral Researchers will have a 6-month review followed by annual reviews at the end of each Part. Part-time students will also have annual reviews at the mid-point of each Part.
The progression requirements in order to pass from one part to the next are outlined in Paragraph 5.2 of Regulation XXVI and further detail is also provided in Section 5 of the Code of Practice. Please refer to these carefully and ensure that you submit any work prior to the deadlines as determined by your School.
Your School will notify you of deadlines for submission of written work and for the scheduling of meetings with your Independent Reviewer. It is essential that you meet these deadlines to ensure that your review takes place prior to the meeting of the School Progression Board.
Mitigating Circumstances
During your research degree, you may experience exceptional, serious, or acute medical, family, personal, or other problems or events beyond your control which you may feel adversely affect your progress, your ability to meet submission deadlines for 6- and 12- month progression reviews or your final submission deadline.
If this occurs, we recommend that you continue to work towards your progression review if possible so that you can receive feedback on your progress. However, you may also ask for your circumstances to be considered by using the University’s appropriate Mitigating Circumstances claim form.
Check out the guidelines outlining the Mitigating Circumstances process, and relevant forms.
