Medical leave

If you are absent from your research programme due to medical reasons, you should notify your Primary Supervisor and School Administrator on the first day of your illness.

Medical leave can be taken due to illness but also may include medical appointments and treatments.

If you are absent for more than 7 calendar days, you should provide satisfactory evidence of the need for medical leave (for example, a medical certificate) to your School Administrator.

If your medical leave extends beyond 14 calendar days, you should contact your supervisor to discuss whether an approved short absence from studies or a Leave of Absence may be appropriate. If a short absence or leave of absence is subsequently approved by the Doctoral College Office, your expected submission deadline and final submission deadline would be extended in line with the absence.

If you are in receipt of a University administered stipend, you will normally be entitled to a total of up to 28 weeks sickness pay within a rolling 12-month period. The total cumulative amount of medical leave must not exceed 52 weeks across the whole Studentship. If your expected submission deadline is extended in line with a short absence of over 2 weeks or formal leave of absence due to medical reasons, then you will be entitled to sickness pay during this period.

The studentship end date and expected submission date of the thesis will normally be extended by a period equal to the medical leave taken.
