Profile

Stuart is a Visiting Professor to Loughborough University, having been affiliated with Loughborough since arriving as a student in 1973. He was Professor from 1998-2014 prior to taking up a post in Australia, and was Head of the then School of Sport & Exercise Sciences, 2001-2007. Stuart has many formal and informal professional links to the School, including Professor Lauren Sherar, Professor Amanda Daley, and Dr Natalie Pearson.

He is a research professor in the Centre for Health Research at the University of Southern Queensland, near Brisbane, Australia. He holds honorary positions at The University of Queensland, Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute (Melbourne), and University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He is ranked in the top 20 all-time worldwide for career-long citation impact in ‘sport sciences’, is a Clarivate Highly Cited researcher, and is ranked 148th in the world for psychology citations.

Stuart has been senior author of the book ‘Psychology of Physical Activity’ for over 30 years, with the 4th edition published by Routledge in 2021. He has been involved in the production of physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines for Australia, Canada, UK, and WHO. Stuart has Honorary Doctorates from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and the University of Thessaly, Greece.
