Study to become a PE teacher

Applications are now open for the Physical Education PGCE/MSc with QTS programme at Loughborough, for September 2021 entry.

A small number of PGCE Physical Education places have become available for a September 2021 start.

Our Physical Education PGCE/MSc with QTS programme prepares students to teach the 11-18 age range and is offered as a full-time, one-year programme. It provides practical professional preparation for teaching in secondary schools and is designed and delivered in partnership with schools in up to ten local authorities.

By studying on Loughborough's nationally and internationally recognised Physical Education teaching programmes, you will benefit from teaching rated outstanding by Ofsted in the last four inspections, world-class facilities and partnerships with more than 60 schools in the region, allowing us to tailor the PGCE to your needs as a trainee teacher.

The programme

The PGCE course offers 90 credits at Masters level and takes full advantage of the range of expertise offered by staff in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. In addition, specialist tutors and local teachers with wide interests in all aspects of physical education, sport and health contribute to the programme.

For many years, Loughborough has been instrumental in researching and developing innovative ways of teaching curriculum activities and you will be encouraged to share in this work and explore the potential of a broad range of teaching and learning styles.

You will develop your teaching competence across the 11-18 age range in relation to the National Curriculum Physical Education programmes of study, examination accredited courses (e.g. BTech, GCSE, A Level). This will be achieved largely in a practical way with the emphasis on the development of pedagogical skills and effective delivery in the secondary school context. Working alongside other trainees and with experienced teachers in schools, you will learn how to effectively promote the physical, social, moral and cultural development of pupils through physical education.
