Twenty-five years of research on civil wars and conflict resolution. What have we learned?

On 15 May, the department will host a launch event for the twenty-fifth anniversary special issue of the journal of Civil Wars. The launch will be a hybrid event taking place in person and online.

The journal Civil Wars was founded in 1998, at a time when the study of civil wars was starting to emerge as a specific field. At the end of 2023, the journal has celebrated its twenty-five years of existence with a special issue which includes contributions from some of the top figures in civil war studies. This event will be an occasion to reflect on a quarter century of multi-disciplinary research on internal conflicts and to celebrate the contribution of Loughborough University staff to the field.

Professor Caroline Kennedy-Pipe was a co-founder and one of the first editors of the journal. Another IRPH staff, Dr Giulia Piccolino has also contributed to the special issue with an article that looks at the role of the academia in shaping norms of conflict resolution applicable to internal wars. The current editors of the journal, Dr James Worrall (Leeds University), and Dr Alex Waterman (University of Bradford), will join us for the event.

The roundtable will be followed by a working lunch, where graduate students will have the opportunity to meet the journal editors and ask them questions about the publication process. The in-person event is open to all Loughborough staff, PGR and PGT and final year UG students. External participants are welcome to attend online.
