Dr David Worrall

It is with great sadness that we write to inform you that David Worrall, our chemistry colleague of 32 years, passed away on the 21st February 2023.

His funeral will be held at Loughborough Crematorium on 15 March at 1.15 pm with a wake afterwards at The White Horse, Loughborough. His wife Sian, and their children Carys and Aidan, welcome anyone who wishes to attend the funeral and wake, but request family flowers only.  Donations in Dave’s memory should be made to the charity, MIND. Those wishing to donate electronically can do so via JustGiving.

David Worrall was born and bred in Walsall, Birmingham. After 3 years as an undergraduate in Sheffield, Dave moved to Loughborough in 1988 to do a PhD in photochemistry with Frank Wilkinson.  This was noteworthy for several reasons, firstly it led on to a productive postdoctoral post and then a lectureship also at Loughborough, but more importantly this is where he met his future wife, Sian Williams. Dave published 89 papers during his academic career, was promoted to Senior Lecturer and owned may crucial roles including Head of Department, Admissions Tutor and Programme Director for Chemistry and Sport Science.  Outside Chemistry, Dave was the Chair of both the RSc Photochemistry group and the European Photochemistry Association during his career and worked with many University colleagues in ACCME and Wolfson, as well as with national and international academic and industrial collaborators around the world.
