My PhD focuses on multi-scale finite element (FE) modelling of the foot and ankle, spanning from fusion surgery to ligament mechanics and functional gait. First, I develop patient-specific FE models of foot and ankle arthrodesis (e.g. tibiotalar and tibiotalocalcaneal fusion) to compare different fixation constructs and loading conditions, quantifying bone–implant micromotion, stress distribution, and fusion stability.

Building on this, I construct anatomically detailed FE models of the lateral ankle ligaments with non-linear material properties, validated against cadaveric and computational injury data, to examine how ligament strain evolves during inversion and supination mechanisms relevant to chronic ankle instability.

Finally, I integrate these FE models with experimental gait analysis by applying joint kinematics and ground reaction forces measured during walking and landing tasks, allowing me to link implant mechanics and ligament loading to real-world movement patterns. Together, this programme aims to provide a mechanistic framework that connects surgical constructs, ligament behaviour, and gait biomechanics, ultimately informing both surgical decision-making and rehabilitation strategies for people with ankle disorders.
