Professor Nigel Seddon

PhD, MBE

  • Professor of Pulsed Power

Research groups and centres

Prof Nigel Seddon MBE received the B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Reading (U.K.) in 1981, and the Ph.D. degree in Laser Physics from the University of Hull (U.K.) in 1984, where his research focused on mercury bromide laser kinetics.

From 1984 to 2007, he was with BAE Systems’ Advanced Technology Centre, Filton, U.K., where he held positions from Group Leader of the Laser Devices Group to Executive Scientist and Senior Principal Scientist. His work there encompassed the development of high power electromagnetic devices, antennas, metamaterials, plasma sources, pulsed power, and high-power laser technologies. From 2008 to 2023, he served as Senior Technical Expert at MBDA UK Ltd, leading technical teams and providing strategic guidance on Directed Energy Systems. Since 2023, he has worked as an independent consultant, providing advice on pulsed power and high power electromagnetic technologies.

His research interests focus on high power electromagnetics, pulsed power generation, plasma physics, metamaterials, and directed energy technologies, with emphasis on bridging fundamental research and practical defence applications.

Prof. Seddon is a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and has served on the IEEE Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee. He has contributed to numerous international conferences, including IEEE Pulsed Power, EURO-EM, and Joint UK-US Directed Energy Professional Society meetings, and has published over 30 scientific papers and eight patents in the fields of laser physics, high power microwave devices, pulsed power systems, and electromagnetic guns. He was awarded the MBE in 2009 for services to the defence industry and continues to maintain active collaboration with academia and the broader defence research community.
