For eleven years, we have proudly hosted this collaborative exhibition, bringing together our Art and Design Foundation students and Joshibi’s International Arts and Culture students. This event captures our commitment to global perspectives, cultural exchange and creative exploration.
Our partnership with Joshibi is centred on a reciprocal exchange programme. Each year, six of our students spend a year studying in Japan, while six Joshibi students join us to experience our Creative Arts programmes. The Scintilla exhibition provides a shared space for both groups to interpret a common theme and learn from one another’s approaches.

This year’s theme, Scintilla, inspired a wide range of thoughtful and imaginative responses. We set themes that encourage our students to think beyond the obvious, and it was exciting to see how confidently they embraced the challenge.
We are grateful to the many colleagues who make this collaboration possible.
Our sincere thanks go to Professor Linda Dennis and the Joshibi University staff for their continued commitment to the partnership and for supporting their students in presenting their first international exhibition here in the UK.
We also thank our Programme Lead for Art & Design Foundation, Ann Charlish, and her team, whose organisation of the workshop sessions ensures that this exchange is meaningful and memorable - giving our Foundation students the unique opportunity to participate in an international collaboration even before beginning their degree studies.
Our appreciation extends to our English Language Support colleagues, whose excellent classes and recent cultural exchange event brought more Loughborough students into contact with Japanese language and customs than ever before.

We were delighted to share elements of Japanese culture throughout the exhibition. Visitors joined in origami and calligraphy activities, sampled Japanese refreshments, and learned new customs and phrases - a reminder that creative exchange extends far beyond the artworks on display.

Scintilla postcards were available to purchase, with proceeds supporting the mental health charity Mind, reflecting our commitment to social responsibility alongside creative excellence.
As we look ahead, we are already excited to see what ideas will spark next year’s exhibition. Our partnership with Joshibi continues to grow, and we remain proud to champion international collaboration as a defining part of the SDCA experience.
