Matt spoke to our second‑year cohort about his career to date, offering an honest and insightful look into the world of contemporary menswear. He highlighted the enduring importance of tailoring within the fashion industry—perfectly complementing the students’ current project, which challenges them to design and construct a tailored jacket.
Matt also spent time with our final‑year students, reviewing their developing collections and offering personalised feedback. His professional insight helped students refine their concepts, strengthen their design identity, and prepare for the expectations of industry.
Reflecting on his visit, Matt shared:
It’s always a pleasure to return to Loughborough University to deliver a guest lecture and share insights from my career journey. I hope that by discussing my experiences, challenges, and successes, I can offer students meaningful guidance and inspiration as they begin shaping their own paths in design.
I particularly enjoyed reviewing the final year students’ work as the standard is consistently impressive, thoughtful, and highly resolved. What stands out most is the individuality of each designer’s voice. Developing a distinct design language is essential, especially in today’s increasingly competitive creative landscape. It’s encouraging to see such strong and original perspectives emerging from the newly established Fashion Design and Technology programme.”

Dawn Eyre, Deputy Programme Leader, emphasised the value of these experiences for our students:
“Opportunities for students to engage directly with industry professionals are absolutely vital to their development as emerging designers. Hearing real‑world perspectives helps bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, giving students a clearer understanding of the standards, expectations, and creative possibilities within the fashion industry. These interactions not only broaden their knowledge but also inspire confidence, ambition, and a deeper appreciation of how their skills translate beyond the studio. Experiences like this are instrumental in helping students refine their design identity and prepare for the realities of a dynamic and highly competitive industry.”

Matt’s visit reflects our ongoing commitment to embedding industry engagement throughout the Fashion Design and Technology programme, ensuring our students graduate with the creativity, technical skill, and professional insight needed to thrive in the fashion sector.
We are already looking forward to future partnerships!
