Dr Harvey worked as a Research Assistant and Research Associate on projects funded by the European Commission, Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), InnovateUK (UKRI), and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). On these projects she has investigated how people interact with complex systems across a range of sectors – construction, transport, IT, and healthcare.
Their topics have included:
- Motorcycle accidents (SaferWheels 2017)
- Data security (TAtoDPR 2017)
- Safety culture in construction (Tideway Tracer 2018-19)
- Pedestrian modelling in rail (COUNTER 2019)
- The circular economy of electronic products (C-SERVEES 2019)
- Healthcare systems design (DECODE 2023-26)
Prior toher PhD she worked in the defense sector, applying human factors in product development and occupational health.
Since November 2023 I have been part of the DECODE team, an NIHR-funded research project which aims to improve health and social care for people with learning disabilities. DECODE’s AI predicts which health conditions people are at risk of developing. In my role, I work with our PPI (Public and Patient Involvement) partners and participants to explore how these insights could transform services – delivering personalised care, focusing on prevention, and improving health outcomes.
More broadly, I am interested in human factors and ergonomics; complex systems; systems thinking; transdisciplinarity; design for health, safety and wellbeing; design for equity; inclusive design; participatory design; qualitative methods; and research inclusion.
Although my current role is research focussed, in the past I have been part of the student experience through education, outreach, and assessment. I have delivered lectures, labs, and practical workshops on the following topics as part of MSc and BSc programmes at Loughborough and other universities:
- Physical ergonomics (Anthropometry, manual handling, workstations and control panels)
- Cognitive ergonomics (Sensory processing, human error, workload, mental models, situational awareness)
- Systems ergonomics (Socio-technical systems theory, organisational/safety culture, risk management, accident analysis)
- Occupational health (health and safety, organisational behaviour)
I am part of the LURSA (Loughborough University's Research Staff Association) committee - serving as one of two representatives for Design and Creative Arts (DCA) and co-secretary. LURSA is a staff network for research-only staff with the goal of improving our employment conditions, professional development opportunities, and research culture across the university.
We host a quarterly Researcher Forum in SDCA where researchers can meet each other; bring their questions, worries, and ideas; and shape school and university research policy.
