This year’s Annual Public Lecture was provided by Andrew Haldane CBE — Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, and formerly Chief Economist at the Bank of England and Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Arts — focused on the topic of ‘Communicating about the economy’.
Aiming to further develop a passion for the subject in the next generation of students, Andrew’s talk highlighted the importance of effective communication in shaping and improving the workings of economies and wider society.
The lecture was introduced by Professor Sir Chrisopher Pissarides, Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, Past President of the RES, and Recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.
Discussing the importance of the annual event, Sir Christopher said: “The Royal Economic Society’s Annual Public Lecture has long been a staple event in the academic year for younger students with an interest in economics.
“The RES are delighted to be able to bring students the opportunity to hear from great academic and professional minds from the world of economics. Students hear topics, ideas and methodologies they might not find in their textbooks, and the chance to meet top names from our profession.
“I am thrilled to have been invited to Loughborough University to chair this year’s Annual Public Lecture, I do hope that those who cannot join us in person, make use of the recording from the lecture.”
