Loughborough Business School has reinforced its position as a leader in climate resilience and rail operations research through the reappointment as Visiting Professor of Dr Brian Haddock, Head of Weather Resilience at Network Rail.

Dr Haddock is an experienced industry expert, whose work is helping to shape the future of the UK’s rail network while addressing some of the most pressing challenges posed by climate change. He has been instrumental in developing strategies to mitigate the impact of extreme weather on rail operations.

Dr Haddock’s influential paper to the National Task Force comprised of the Department for Transport, Cabinet Office, ORR, and HM Treasury, highlighted the urgent need for research into weather resilience and the creation of a seasonally agnostic timetable for the rail network. This vision for improving weather resilience has resulted in three fully funded PhD studentships at Loughborough University under his mentorship, positioning the University at the forefront of this critically important research area.

As leader of the UK Railway Research Innovation Network (UKRRIN) weather and climate workstream, Dr Haddock has brought together universities, SMEs, and infrastructure owners to deliver practical, industry-focused solutions. This collaboration has secured significant funding, co-authored successful grants, and established a sustainable framework for future research.

Beyond research leadership, Dr Haddock has played a key role in fostering knowledge exchange. He has organised seminars, workshops, and UKRRIN meetings at Loughborough, creating opportunities for academics, industry professionals, and students to collaborate. His work in this area has ensured that research outcomes remain aligned with real-world challenges, particularly in areas such as risk management, strategic planning, and sustainability.

Professor Crispin Coombs, Associate Dean for Research & Innovation at Loughborough Business School, said: “Dr Brian Haddock’s work exemplifies the impact of strong partnerships between academia and industry. His purposeful, forward-thinking leadership is helping to shape a more resilient rail network while contributing to broader strategies for managing environmental risk.”

“At both a School and University level, the themes of sustainability and climate change are incredibly important motivators for our research. To truly make Progress with Purpose, we need to be willing to invest the time and resources into tackling the biggest challenges facing businesses, communities and nations today.”
