Research and expertise

My PhD research focuses on the relationship between project governance and public engagement in the context of small modular reactors. I use a sociotechnical lens to examine how governance arrangements, organisational practices, and public participation interact in emerging low-carbon energy projects. Drawing on my background in civil engineering and construction management, I bring together technical and social perspectives to analyse the delivery of complex infrastructure.

My work also engages with gender studies in construction and organisations, particularly how organisational cultures, professional practices, and project environments shape inclusion and participation. Methodologically, I use qualitative research approaches, with a particular focus on ethnographic techniques for understanding organisational practices, interactions, and everyday experiences in project settings. More broadly, my research explores the relationship between social and technological processes and uses theory to understand organisational challenges in projects involving new and contested technologies.

Current research activity

  • PhD project: Project Governance and Public Engagement for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
  • Research Project: Mobility as a service (MaaS)/Public transport mobile apps and the older population: barriers and enablers

Recently completed research projects

  • Usability Testing of a public engagement platform, called “Shaping Charnwood”

Teaching

I contribute to learning and teaching activities across the Schools programmes including:

Undergraduate

  • CVC125 Integrative Project

Profile

I am a Doctoral Researcher in the Construction Management Group within the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering at Loughborough University. I started my PhD in January 2025 under the supervision of Dr Vivien Chow and Professor Chris Gorse. My doctoral research focuses on the relationship between project governance and public engagement in the context of small modular reactors, using a sociotechnical lens to examine complex organisationss and projects.

Alongside my doctoral research, I serve as a doctoral representative for both my School and research group, and I am also part of the university-wide PhD Social and Support Network. I contribute to undergraduate teaching as a teaching assistant, supporting construction site visits and tutorial sessions across selected modules.

I have also worked as a research assistant on two projects. The first was Loughborough University’s Seedcorn project, Shaping Loughborough, where I worked with Loughborough University Senior Academics and Charnwood Borough Council to support public engagement and consultation activities to develop design codes. This also involved usability testing of a digital platform used to engage members of the public. The second project focused on testing the usability of Mobility as a Service platforms and transport apps for older adults around Nottingham, where I supported data collection and analysis.

My research interests include public engagement, project governance, sociotechnical approaches, qualitative research, ethnographic methods, and gender studies in construction and organisations.
