equipment in a lab

The I&RC has access to eight powertrain test cells, experimental test rigs and through its collaborative work with Caterpillar has led to the development of some world class facilities.

Powertrains Laboratory

Two dedicated engine test cells provide the opportunity to test a range of engines and ancillary systems from single cylinder optical engines up to Cat® 7.1 litre 6-cylinder diesel engines. This is supported by purpose-built experimental test rigs for testing: fuel spray imaging and PDA measurement, cylinder port flow measurement, Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system development, injector cavitation and specialised optical access rigs (e.g. coolant system components) which support Computer aided engineering (CAE).
