Milken-Motsepe Prize in Green Energy

Aftrak is honoured to be named the $1 million Grand Prize winner of the Milken-Motsepe Prize in Green Energy at the opening of the Milken Institute Global Conference.

May 6, 2024 (Los Angeles and Johannesburg) – The Milken Institute and the Motsepe Foundation today announced Aftrak the winner of the $1 million Grand Prize to advance green energy in Africa with OMNIVAT awarded runner-up prize of $250,000.

Dr Jonathan Wilson describes the Aftrak system and its benefits

The Aftrak system is already in use in Malawi - where more than 60% of the population is multi-dimensionally poor and close to 90% are without access to electricity.

The Milken-Motsepe Prize in Green Energy is focused on the energy crisis in Africa, but the ideas and solutions generated could be used to help the 940 million people - or 13% - who do not have access to electricity globally.

Dawn-to-dusk test

The Prize required time-stamped pictures and videos of Aftrak in action. We ran the the test from 5.00am through to 9.00pm on Leicestershire's sunniest July day in 2023. We're delighted to say that we exceeded all expectations.
