Jodrell Bank, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will host the Royal Society’s showcase of past exhibits from its annual Summer Science Exhibition in London.
As part of Loughborough University’s interactive exhibit, ‘Fuelling the Future’, a team of EnerHy researchers and academics from the School of Science will showcase pioneering technologies designed to replace fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions. The exhibit highlights how waste biomass such as woodchips, corn husks, and algae can be converted into valuable products like fuels, plastics, and fabrics using advanced catalysts.
Visitors will also explore the future of green hydrogen, a clean energy source produced using only water and renewable electricity. This technology has the potential to revolutionise how we power our homes, vehicles, and industries in a net-zero world.
'Fuelling the Future' brings together Loughborough’s Royal Society Summer Science Exhibit ‘Replacing Oil’ from 2022 and its ‘Green Hydrogen for a Net Zero Future’ exhibit, featured at the Festival of Tomorrow in 2024 and 2025 with Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) support. Both exhibits were led by Professor Sandie Dann, EnerHy Co-Director and Professor of Materials Chemistry, who also leads the 'Fuelling the Future' initiative.
Exhibit highlights include:
- A VR experience inside Loughborough’s innovative battery-electrolyser test unit that generates affordable green hydrogen
- Demonstrations of hydrogen-powered model cars that emit only water
- Hands-on activities to explore molecular structures and catalytic reactions
- Opportunities to speak with EnerHy researchers about the science behind sustainable energy and the school subjects and degree opportunities for a career in net zero
Professor Dan Parsons, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, said: “I am delighted to see Loughborough’s cutting-edge research and real-world impact showcased once more at such a prestigious event. ‘Fuelling the Future’ reflects our strong commitment to sustainability, innovation, and inspiring the next generation to shape a net-zero world through advances in research. However, we also know that such advances also need explaining to the public and the interactive nature of the exhibit is a testament to Loughborough University’s determination to engage all ages in the science that will transform all our futures.”
