Experts in Sport: Strategies for weight management – simplifying small changes

In a culture fixated on weight loss and management, we often overcomplicate the topic more than necessary. But how can we achieve and maintain long-term changes to our lifestyle and habits for good?

In this episode of the Experts in Sport podcast, host Martin Foster sits down with Dr Claire Madigan to discuss weight loss drugs, the importance of behaviour changes around diet, and considering individual variables in the process of weight loss and management.

Dr Claire Madigan currently researches primary care practices and supporting individuals’ weight management and weight loss prior to undergoing surgery. She completed an undergraduate degree in sports studies, going on to study a masters in nutrition, physical activity and public health and then completing a PhD in behavioural weight management interventions in primary care.

Dr Madigan is also part of the University’s Centre for Lifestyle Medicine and Behaviour (CLiMB).

Cultural effects of governmental inaction are discussed with regards to public education around nutrition and weight management, especially amongst the youth population. Pharmaceutical remedies for obesity are considered, along with the benefits of exercise referral and calorie deficit methods to accompany medical intervention.

The success of receiving group social support in the maintenance of weight loss becomes evident, as well as the positive effects of self-accountability throughout the process. Discussions around the implementation of weight management and fitness apps are informed by issues around weight loss maintenance and whether this is achievable in the long-term.
