Loughborough students debut at international powerlifting competition

Kyle Renwick, Ming Lau and Rob Salvesen have travelled to Tartu, Estonia to compete in the 4th World University Powerlifting Cup.

The three Loughborough students, who train in Powerbase, were at the top of their game, in what was their first international competition.

Competitors are required to squat, bench press and deadlift, with medals awarded for each as well as overall performance.

Lau hit a 10kg personal best and placed 6th in the U105 category. A recent Loughborough graduate in Business, Economics and Finance, he will be returning to pursue a master’s in Management next year.

On competing he said: “It was a once in a lifetime experience. I was able to meet powerlifters from around the world and I hope to qualify again next year”.

Ming Lau’s results are as follows:

  • Squat: 245kg
  • Bench: 157.5kg
  • Deadlift: 275kg

Alumnus Kyle Renwick, also competed in the U105 category, narrowly missing out on a deadlift bronze with a 285kg lift. His final results in the squat and bench were 255kg and 160kg respectively.

He commented: “This was my favourite competition I've done so far. I performed extremely well against my expectations and was in a position to challenge for medals, which was a first for me.”

First year Sport Science student, Rob Salvesen, hit PBs in all three disciplines at the competition, including a massive 25kg increase on his University Championships total.

Finishing 9th in the U83 category, Salvesen achieved:

  • Squat: 207.5kg
  • Bench: 125kg
  • Deadlift: 245kg

On his first international competition Salvesen said: “It was great to be able to represent Loughborough on such a large stage”.

The three students achieved incredible results in Estonia, putting Loughborough firmly on the global powerlifting map.
