Loughborough has been ranked among the UK’s top 10 universities in the Guardian University Guide 2027, securing 9th place out of 123 institutions nationwide. It is also the East Midland’s top ranked university.

The result reinforces Loughborough's position as one of the country's leading universities and highlights its continued excellence in teaching, student experience, employability and academic achievement.

The Guardian University Guide is one of the UK's most widely recognised league tables, helping prospective students compare universities using measures including student satisfaction, teaching quality and graduate outcomes.

Loughborough’s 9th position is the latest of several significant achievements for the University in 2026. Earlier this year, Loughborough celebrated a decade at number one in the world for sports-related subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, and extended its record of more than 10 consecutive years in the top 10 of the separate Complete University Guide.

Professor Nick Jennings, President and Vice-Chancellor of Loughborough University, said: “I am absolutely delighted to see Loughborough ranked among the UK's top 10 universities in the Guardian University Guide 2027.

“League tables are important, but what makes this achievement particularly special is that it reflects the everyday efforts of our staff, students and wider community. Across the University, people work incredibly hard to create an environment where students can succeed academically, develop personally and make the most of every opportunity available to them.

“What has always set Loughborough apart is our strong sense of community and our shared ambition to be the very best we can be. To see those qualities recognised in a national ranking such as this is a source of real pride.

“I would like to thank all our staff, students, alumni and partners for the contribution they make to our success. This achievement belongs to all of them, and it gives us great confidence as we look to the future.”

Kieran Oliver, President of Loughborough Students’ Union, added: “It's fantastic to see the University doing so well in the Guardian University Guide rankings.

“For current students, this recognition is something we should feel genuinely proud to be part of. Every student helps shape the reputation of our University, whether that's through academic achievements, involvement in clubs and societies, volunteering, sporting success, or simply contributing positively to our community.

“One of Loughborough's greatest strengths is the positive relationship between staff and students. The collaborative culture across our campuses ensures students are not only supported to succeed academically but are also empowered to shape their wider university experience.

“As Students' Union President, I'm particularly proud of the role our students play in shaping the vibrant and supportive community that makes Loughborough one of the best places to study, grow and enjoy. While rankings are only one measure of success, it's fantastic to see the collective efforts of our university community recognised in this ranking.”

Loughborough also ranks in the top 10 nationally for 15 subjects in the Guardian University Guide 2027. These include first place for Architecture and Graphic Design, second for Criminology, third for Construction, Surveying and Planning and Media & Film Studies, and fifth for Geography.
