Arctic science conference to take place at Loughborough University
Loughborough University will host a three day Arctic science conference next month to give scientists from around the world the opportunity to share information about their research.
More than 100 people will visit the campus between September 11 and September 13.
Researchers from the UK, Denmark, Norway, Russia and Sweden – with backgrounds in physical and social sciences – will take part in lectures, workshops and networking sessions, as well as an educational event with local schools.
Loughborough University staff and postgraduates will be presenting their work, covering topics such as the UK’s foreign policy relationship with the Arctic, the impacts of minerogenic dust on lakes and soils in Greenland and environmental response to changing climate in Svalbard.
Professor Jo Bullard, co-organiser of the conference, said: “Loughborough University has long-established expertise on Arctic environmental change and newly appointed colleagues have expanded our interests into Arctic security and defence.
"We are delighted to be hosting this conference which is a unique opportunity for scientists and social scientists to network and exchange ideas with the Arctic as a unifying focus.
"The large number of early-career researchers attending the conference is extremely encouraging for future Arctic research.”
The event, held at the West Park Teaching Hub, will be formally opened by Baroness Pauline Neville-Jones, former Chairman of the British Joint Intelligence Committee and an active member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Polar Regions.
The event is being funded by the NERC Arctic Office.
