Tom (BSc, PhD, FBCS) is a Professor of Information and Knowledge Management. He has over 20 years’ experience of research and industrial consultancy and secured and managed over £40M of research funding. Tom is widely recognised for his ground-breaking creation, EMOTIVE, which holds the world record for the best f-measure in fine-grained emotion detection. This system has demonstrated exceptional predictive capabilities, enabling real-time outcome predictions for significant events such as US and UK elections, as well as mental health conditions. His research also includes the pioneering work on the dark side of Digital Decarbonisation and the impact on the environment, and it was identified by OECD-OPSI as a critical future focus for accelerating the path to net zero; the first model of information overload; and in his earlier career he was nicknamed “Dr Email” by the BBC for his work on the impact of interrupts in the workplace.
