Advocates & Allies
For activities that have progressed EDI, on behalf of others.
Stevie Ashurst
Over a particularly difficult period of time for the LGBT+ community at Loughborough, Stevie's exemplary leadership of the LGBT+ Staff Network has provided support and reassurance to those affected. This support goes beyond leadership of the network's committee - also including 1:1 support in the form of 'cuppa and a chat sessions'. Stevie has been running these sessions for years, offering a discrete platform for individuals dealing with emotional challenges in the LGBT+ space. Perhaps Stevie put it best themselves - 'you can't change the world with a cuppa, but it's a good start'.
The ‘Inclusive Goals’ Project Team
Inclusive Goals is a new workforce development initiative at Loughborough that embodies the principles of equity, diversity & inclusion. It empowers student volunteers to deliver football sessions to disabled students confidently & competently. In collaboration with Leicestershire & Rutland County FA & The FA it equips student volunteers with the knowledge, skills & confidence to deliver engaging & inclusive football activities.

Dr Akiwowo was nominated for her outstanding work as Curator for the groundbreaking exhibition "Five Pillars: Lived Experiences, New Futures". The exhibition celebrated Muslim identities and Islamic culture at Loughborough University and in the wider local community by bringing together contributions from students, doctoral researchers, staff and community members. Kerri effectively raised the profile of EDI at the University and in the wider community, working with LU Arts and Equality Action Charnwood.
Age Appreciation Advocates
Catherine is leading the Age Appreciation Staff Group, which focuses on age-related health issues, and their impact on working lives; the lack of support and guidance related to retirement. Silke has delivered a Lunch & Learn session on Age Appreciation for the School of Science, promoting intergenerational understanding and inclusive dialogue. Joseph is the Chair of the Early Careers Network, which aims to support professional development, foster networking and signposting, and cultivate a strong sense of belonging among early career staff.
