Dr Cihan Butun

PhD in Business and Management; MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management; Master of Business Administration

  • Lecturer in Management Science and Operations

Cihan joined Loughborough University in September 2022. He has an MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (2014) and PhD in Business and Management (2020), both from the Nottingham University Business School (NUBS).

Prior to joining Loughborough University, Cihan worked in the EU-funded PortForward project as a postdoctoral research fellow at Brunel University London between 2020 and 2022. He was part of a team working on the green scheduling and sustainability of container terminal operations. Cihan contributed to these works in the design and development of heuristics solution methods and implementation and deployment of a decision support system that enables users optimise selected terminal operations by considering multiple productivity and environmental sustainability criteria.

Cihan also has industrial experience in maritime shipping sector. He worked in the international trading arm of Heidelberg Cement and involved in managing of shipping operations and chartering of ships between 2008 and 2013.

Cihan’s research is mainly about the optimisation of logistics and transportation systems through methods of operational research including mathematical modelling, metaheuristics, and heuristic methods. His research topics involve container shipping network design, locational analysis of hub facilities in maritime networks, sustainable port and shipping operations.

He has presented his research output in various academic conferences and is building a publication portfolio in operational research/management science journals such as European Journal of Operational Research.
