Wei It joined Wolfson School in January 2020 as a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Joanna Szmelter and Dr. Andrew Clarke in order to further advance the in-house flow-solver for turbulent jet flow applications.

Prior to Loughborough University, Wei It graduated with an integrated Masters of Engineering (MEng) degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College London. During his undergraduate years, Wei It also gained research experience in turbulence modelling for turbomachinery CFD applications at Imperial as well as spent a year in industry at Rolls-Royce Plc in which he took part in developing codes for automating engineering design analysis.

PhD Thesis Title: Understanding fuel jets: Advanced CFD methods for turbulent flows

The proposed research will focus on the development of the in-house high-resolution Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, particularly to simulate turbulent jet flows with higher fidelity. It will concentrate on the fundamental development of turbulence approaches, based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES), Implicit LES (ILES) and Direct Eddy Simulation (DNS) as well as advanced methods for solving partial differential equations describing fluid flows.

The research includes modelling of low-speed jets and investigation into new concepts of boundary wall treatments and shear flow. On top of that, the in-house CFD code will be further extended to incorporate capabilities for the simulations of advanced jet flow applications such as the fuel-jet behavior in novel high-efficiency engines and jet injection of drugs in medical applications.
