Ross obtained an MChem from the University of Edinburgh, with a placement in industry which was spent at the Institute for Chemical and Engineering Sciences in Singapore. He then went on to study for a DPhil in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Oxford with Prof. Philip Mountford, investigating the unusual bonding behaviour and reactivity of group 2 and group 12 metal-metal bonded complexes.
After some time spent as a Technologist in industry, Ross joined Loughborough University in 2025 as a Senior Technician and Technical Tutor. Ross manages and maintains the Department of Chemistry's NMR service.
