Research and expertise
My current research involves generating models that could inform us about the possible environmental impacts of floating offshore structures on the mixing potential in stratified seas by quantifying the physical wake and mixing parameters in different length scales past the structures.
There is a possibility of positive environmental impacts such as countering the increased stratification strength caused by the warming oceans from climate change, to improving primary productivity and fish biomass at sites closer to floating offshore structures.
To achieve this, the custom models are generated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software – OpenFOAM, to simulate the stratified environment and to validate these results against in-situ data. Furthermore, the physics in these models could be scaled up to look at different length scales – local to regional in using ocean models, which could inform us about inter-array wind farm mixing interactions and their considerations for siting and consenting processes.
Profile
I graduated from University of Glasgow in 2022, with a BSc Honours in Environmental Science and Sustainability and a MSc in Marine Renewable Energy from Bangor University in 2023.
While at University of Glasgow, I developed a keen interest in environmental impacts and mitigation, taking inspiration from UK Net Zero targets to study marine renewable resources at Bangor University. Combining the two interests led me to take on a ESPRC-NERC funded PhD at the University of Hull with Aura Centre of Doctoral Training, obtaining a PGDip in Offshore Wind and the Environment there. I am currently progressing through my PhD at Loughborough University.
My main interest areas revolve around computational fluid dynamics of floating offshore wind platforms and the environmental impacts of the resultant marine wake in different length scales – local to regional.
My other research interests involve climate impact on wind resources, tidal and wave energy, coupled atmosphere-ocean models, and computational fluid dynamics. I am an enthusiast for all possible viable renewable energy options to bring a swift transition to net zero as well as the possibilities of AI’s role for helping us achieve it.
