Loughborough’s School of Business and Economics is a thriving forward-looking centre of education that aims to provide an exceptional learning experience. Students seeking rewarding careers in business, finance or economics will find we offer ‘real-life’, vocationally-relevant degrees that equip them with the professional knowledge and skills sought by leading employers.
Many of our teaching staff are invited by governments and companies across the world to advise on issues of policy and practice. Internationally recognised for research, and often coming from industry, they will provide you with an in-depth knowledge of the challenges confronting business, industry, financial institutions, governments and individuals.
We are committed to helping you stand out in the increasingly competitive graduate job market and many of our graduates go on to enjoy rewarding careers with major international companies.
Our high quality courses develop skills valued by employers including independent learning and research, analytical skills, group work, presentation skills, project work, computer skills and numeracy. Our wide variety of optional modules enables students to focus on the areas of interest to their career aspirations.
Lectures are supported by online resources, tutorials, workshops, seminars and discussion groups. Some tutorials are streamed according to prior qualifications in mathematics and economics.
Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination. Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, contribution in tutorials, group work, class tests, problem-sheets and computer-based exercises.
All of our Business courses are four year sandwich degrees with the third year spent on a salaried professional placement. Loughborough was one of the UK’s pioneers of sandwich degrees.
We currently have contacts with over 250 employers in over 15 countries and many companies specifically target us for placement students. Whilst securing suitable employment for the placement year remains the student’s responsibility, our dedicated and experienced Placements Office provides extensive support.
The skills and experience gained during your placement can lead to an offer of permanent employment on graduation and many of our students enjoy starting salaries well above the national average. On successful completion of your placement you will receive a Diploma in Professional Studies in addition to your degree.
Although the placement is not a compulsory part of our Economics courses, students who wish to extend their chosen course to four years can spend a year on placement.
All of our students can also choose to develop their language skills with us and spend the year between their second and final year studying abroad at one of our partner universities.
Selection interviews are not normally held, and offers of places are made on the basis of your UCAS form, particularly your referee’s report and previous examination performances. Candidates who are offered a place are invited to visit the School and meet staff on one of several Visit Days.
