The primary aim of this course is to prepare international students for the demands of their programme of study by:
- increasing the students’ overall level of English language proficiency;
- equipping students with the academic English and study skills required to cope with the learning demands of a Loughborough degree programme, and;
- assisting students’ integration into the British social and academic environment.
The Pre-sessional Courses aim to help students through the transition period from their own country to Britain. The University strongly recommends that students who have not studied in Britain before should attend a Pre-sessional Course, as this enables them to work much more effectively, and therefore successfully, in a British University environment when their academic courses begin.
If you are studying with Loughborough University in London in September 2017, your pre-sessional course will be based at the Loughborough campus. You will be able to book campus accommodation for the duration of this course, and will have the opportunity to visit the London campus as part of the welcome programme. Transport to the London Campus will be arranged for you at the end of the Pre-sessional Course.
If you are unsure as to which course you can attend, please go to Entry requirements.
Students attending Pre-sessional Course A (30 week course) and B (20 week course) are required to take IELTS tests in May and June and must meet a minimum standard* to be permitted to continue with their English language studies on Pre-sessional Course C. All students are assessed by tests and coursework at the end of Pre-sessional Courses C and D. Any students who do not meet the acceptable standard may be required to attend extra English language classes during the rest of the academic year. Students who fail to engage appropriately with the Pre-sessional course will not be considered to have successfully completed the pre-sessional course and therefore will not have met the conditions of their offer from the University. Students whose level of English language is considered to be below the minimum level required by the UK Home Office for a student visa will not be permitted to progress on to their degree.
*Please note the minimum IELTS score required to progress on to Pre-sessional Course C is usually 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in all subtests). However, higher scores are required for some courses. Please check the English language requirements for your academic programme.
