Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST)

Flexible online learning: a gateway to an accredited qualification and a rewarding career in renewable energy

As a distance learning MSc student, our course offers you flexibility of learning in time and place, a highly accredited qualification and enhanced employability. But don’t just take our word for it! Here is what our recent distance learning graduates have to say about studying with us:

"Studying by distance...suited me perfectly, as I didn't need to travel and could fit the lectures around my work"

Ronan O'Meara, Project Manager, Right Road Renewables.

"I found this course a very rewarding experience and would definitely recommend it."

Stephen Herd, Engineering Team Leader, Caterpillar.

Distance learning with CREST is a form of education designed to be as flexible as possible to meet the training needs and requirements of both you, as an individual, and your organisation.

Flexibility of place — means that although tutorial support is a key element of the CREST programmes, you are not actually required to meet your tutors face-to-face. Therefore study is not confined to any particular location. You can study anywhere in the world!

Distance learning students are also welcome to join us at our beautiful Loughborough campus as part of a blended approach to their study. This means you can choose to study completely at a distance or take some of the modules on-campus side-by-side with our full-time MSc students.

Flexibility of time — enables you to fit your study around your work or family commitments at the most convenient times for you. Lectures are both streamed live and recorded so you can view and download them with ease.

Flexibility of content —our spread of optional modules means you can devise a programme of study which precisely reflects your areas of interest.

Flexibility of pace — allows you to control the rate at which you study. For most students, the typical completion time is 3-4 years.

In other words, distance learning with CREST gives you, the learner, more control over where and how you learn.

This does not mean that our programmes are not structured. In fact, quite the opposite! Your learning will take place within a planned framework of study.

Both full-time and distance learning versions of our MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology is approved by three premier UK professional Engineering Institutions; the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Energy Institute.

This programme is CEng accredited and fulfils the educational requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer when presented with a CEng accredited Bachelors programme.

The Renewable Energy Systems Technology MSc is an established and highly regarded course worldwide, and our graduates are in great demand in the renewables industry around the world.

Our students range from recent graduates of BEng or BSc programmes to mid-career professionals looking for a change or who want to keep up to speed with developments in the renewable energy industry, whether in technology R&D, project development or policy and investment.

As a Loughborough student, you are also able to make full use of the career services on offer, especially the support of our Careers and Employability Centre who offer advice on all aspects of career planning including locating employers and vacancies, interview techniques and one-2-one advice sessions.

What our Alumni think of the Course

Ronan O’Meara is now Project Manager with Right Road Renewables in County Kildare, Ireland.

After a bit of research into the various courses available in the UK and Ireland, I figured that CREST was one of the best on offer – indeed, some courses in other colleges were actually using teaching material licensed from CREST!

Studying by distance also suited me perfectly, as I didn’t need to travel and could fit the lectures in around my work... the ability to pause a lecture, go for a cup of tea and then press play again was an added bonus of being a DL student!
