Full profile

Sean Smith

I did my undergraduate degree here in the department and decided to stay on to do a PhD as I was offered the exciting opportunity of working in a research consortium made up of several Industrial partners and four academic institutions. Being part of the scheme meant that I could further my academic career, maintain strong links with industry and that I’d have access to significant resources and samples not available in a traditional PhD programme

My PhD project involves evaluating the suitability of a candidate alloy for use in a next generation power plant. The evaluation is carried out through studying fine scale changes in the alloy at a range of different temperatures and mechanical conditions.

Since I began my PhD I’ve presented at a number of conferences including an international conference in Santa Fe New Mexico. I’ve also published a conference paper and have two others in the pipeline. In the future I’d like to use the skills and experience I have gained from my studies working in industry. The fact that my PhD research is industrially relevant has helped me make important contacts and will improve my employment prospects.
