Full profile

Steve Owen

As Loughborough has a reputation for excellence in materials science I knew the Materials Department would be able to offer me the right kind of support and supervision for my PhD.  I graduated with a PhD in the mechanical and fire retardant properties of ABS Plastic around 13 years ago and am now working as a Technical Consultant for Alliance Boots. The role is very varied and is based around protecting the Boots brand by delivering customer satisfaction through ensuring that our products are safe and of good quality.

I am responsible for writing and maintaining the performance specifications of many Boots products, ensuring that legal obligations are satisfied. The strategic aspect of the role is to advise and implement the policies for how we use plastics in a global business, especially with sustainability and lean manufacturing in mind. In recent years I have been involved in driving forward Boots’ usage of recycled plastics.

It would not be possible to fulfil this type of consultancy role for a major blue chip organisation without the specific skills I gained from my PhD – my studies at Loughborough have been invaluable to my career.
